1. When is my court date?

If you received a citation, you will notice two court dates listed towards the bottom. The first court date is your opportunity to appear and contest your charge(s) with our prosecutor/judge. If you fail to pay your citation prior to court or fail to appear at that hearing, you will be found guilty by default for all charges. Your failure to appear will result in the second hearing date, at which time you may show cause why you should not be held in contempt.

2. Can I change my court date?

Yes, you may reschedule your court date one time only. However, you must make your request to the court before your initial court date.

3. What if I receive a ticket for No Proof of Insurance?

The State of Tennessee requires you to have Proof of Insurance in your car at all times. If you had insurance when the citation was issued but did not have it with you, you can bring in that proof to the Clerk’s Office. Optionally, you may fax in your proof of insurance to (901) 221-8525. Please include citation number when faxing. Proof must be presented to the clerk BEFORE your court date. The charge will then be dismissed.

If you did not have insurance at the time the citation was issued, the ticket fine is $50.00 plus court costs. If you go and purchase insurance after you were cited, you are still guilty and subject to the fine. Please reference the State website for more information regarding Financial Responsibility.

4. If I disagree with the Judge's ruling on my case, what can I do?

If you are dissatisfied with the Judge’s ruling on your case, you may Appeal to have a completely new trial at Circuit Court in Fayette County. This must be filed within 10 days after your court hearing. Please contact court clerk at (901) 853-4834 for further info.

Once the case is turned over to Circuit Court, City Court is no longer involved. However, if the City Court Judge’s decision is upheld, you will be required to pay the original fines/fees to the City Court just as you were instructed prior to your appeal.

5. I've recently been contacted by a collection agency. What do I do next?

Once matters have been turned over to collections, you must call Municipal Services Bureau at (800) 866-9436 or (800) 616-0166.

6. How can I find out why my driver's licenses are suspended?

You must call the Tennessee Department of Safety at (866) 903-7357. They can tell you why and who has your license suspended and what you have to do to get them corrected.

7. Where do I go to obtain/renew my Tennessee driver's license?
