[ARCHIVED] 2016 Special Census Results

Dear Piperton Resident:

On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and myself, I want to thank you for participating in the 2016 Special Census. The success of the census depended largely upon the cooperation of each Piperton household in providing the requested census data. Thanks to you, the City was able to collect and remit the census data to the state in a timely manner, and city staff was just notified by the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development that the City’s census data has been approved and certified!

Piperton, like other Tennessee municipalities, receives a significant amount of its budget revenue from state collected taxes that are shared with the municipalities on a per capita basis. In an effort to ensure that our City receives its fair share of these state-shared revenues (approximately $120.45 per capita for Fiscal Year 2016), city officials felt it prudent that the City conduct - at its expense - one of the four special censuses it is currently permitted to conduct between each federal decennial census.

The investment ($3,630.00) was worth it! The results of the special census revealed that Piperton’s population has grown to 1,632 from its 2010 federal census count of 1,445 - a 12.9 percent increase. Based on the City’s newly certified population, city staff has projected an additional $23,000.00 annually to the City’s coffers, based on the state’s Municipal Technical Advisory Service’s latest forecast. This additional revenue will be used to continue to enhance the City’s service delivery to its residents, as well as relieve the burden on tax dollars generated locally.

If you have any questions about the 2016 Special Census results, please contact Christi Cannon at (901) 853-4830 Ext. 1 or email: ccannon@pipertontn.com. You may also contact City Manager Steve Steinbach at (901) 853-4830 Ext. 6 or email: ssteinbach@pipertontn.com.

Thank you again for your cooperation and support!

Sincerely,
Henry Coats, Mayor
