[ARCHIVED] PIPERTON 2019 SPECIAL CENSUS

Dear Piperton Resident:

The City is conducting a follow-up special census to the special census it conducted in 2016, which resulted in a certified population count of 1,632 – an increase of more than 12% from the certified 2010 federal census population count of 1,445.  City officials have observed continued consistent growth over the last three years, and have determined that conducting another special census in advance of the national 2020 federal census is merited.

Why is conducting a special census important to the residents of Piperton?  The state of Tennessee distributes various tax proceeds to municipalities and counties by population (approximately $127.47 on a per capita basis in 2018).  Demonstrated increases in the City’s population will result in the receipt of additional revenue that is used to pay for City services while reducing the burden on locally generated property and sales tax dollars.

We need your assistance to obtain an accurate up-to-date population count to verify the increase since the 2016 special census.  The state of Tennessee requires that the special census collect the first and last name of each and every individual legally residing at your household, along with the street address, city, state, and zip code for each resident.  No additional data (such as age, race, status of property ownership, etc) is required.  I’m asking for your help in this endeavor by providing your household information in one of three ways:

  1. Fill out the census form that you received via the United States Postal Service and return it in the enclosed postage-paid envelope.
  2. Complete and submit electronic form. CLICK HERE.
  3. Call the City at (901) 853-4830 Ext. 1 and provide the information directly to City staff.

It is urgent that you supply this information by Monday, February 4, 2019.  The City is required to field check all addresses that do not return the required special census information. Please help us avoid that expense by providing it by the deadline.

Please note that the City’s special census will not supplant the 2020 federal census.  It is vital that you respond to both the City’s 2019 special census and the 2020 federal census.

If you have any questions about the special census, please call (901) 853-4830 Ext. 1.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Sincerely,

Henry Coats, Mayor
